چکیده

This study sought to assess the impact of selected soil conservation and water harvesting technologies as promising options for alleviating moisture crisis, enhancing fertility reducing erosion in drylands Eastern Kenya. An experiment was set up investigate responses aggregate stability, contents microbial biomass carbon nitrogen (SMBC SMBN) Zai technology combined with integrated nutrient amendment. pit involves use holes or basins varying diameters farming activities drylands.  The done a completely randomized block design. Soils (0 15cm) from eight treatments (replicated thrice): no input (ZNO), sole manure (ZM60), full rate chemical fertilizer (ZF60), mineral (ZM30F30), conventional (CM60), (CF60), (CM30F30) control (CNO), were subjected laboratory analyses using various methods suggested by previous studies. ZM60 recorded 25% significantly high (p<0.05) stable aggregation compared CM60. 32 days after sowing LR2019 season, ZM30F30 34% content than CM30F30. highest values SMBC SMBN which 17.1% 36.5% higher that value results this demonstrate importance organic inorganic amendments an agricultural intervention can improve biomass, thus contributing overall improvement health fertility. Key words: Aggregate Mean weight diameter, Soil content, Volumetric technology.

Effect of Integrated Water-Nutrient Management Strategies on Soil Erosion Mediated Nutrient Loss and Crop Productivity in Cabo Verde Drylands

Soil erosion, runoff and related nutrient losses are a big risk for soil fertility in Cabo Verde drylands. In 2012, field trials were conducted in two agro-ecological zones to evaluate the effects of selected techniques of soil-water management combined with organic amendments (T1: compost/manure + soil surfactant; T2: compost/animal or green manure + pigeon-pea hedges + soil surfactant; T3: co...

Integrated nutrient management strategies in Eastern Uganda

A project of the CGIAR systemwide program on Soil, Water and Nutrient Management (SWNM), concerned with improving integrated nutrient management practices on small-scale farms in Africa, has been carried out in Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda for last two years (September 1999 to September 2001). The project aims to enable small-scale farmers to profitably reverse nutrient depletion of their soils b...

Soil Microbial Biomass Carbon and Nitrogen in Himalayan Rangeland of Eastern Nepal: A Comparison between Grazed and Non-grazed Rangelands

Soil microbial biomass plays an important role in nutrient transformation in terrestrial ecosystems. Microbial biomass is also an early indicator of changes in total soil organic carbon. Thus, the main objective of this study was to identify and quantify the present status of soil microbial biomass carbon and nitrogen with various management practices in Himalayan rangeland. To meet the aforeme...

Soil Organic Carbon Content and Stocks in Relation to Grazing Management in Semi-Arid Grasslands of Kenya

Rangelands cover approximately 85% of Kenya’s land mass and is a major resource for livestock farming with a considerable potential to mitigate climate change, yet these lands are stressed differently by various management. Our study aimed at determining the influence of grazing management systems (rotational, continuous and ungrazed) on soil organic carbon stocks in Yoani ranch located in the ...

Maize productivity and nutrient use efficiency in Western Kenya as affected by soil type and crop management

Low soil fertility and high weed infestation are the main culprits for the declining maize production inWestern Kenya. Technology packages to address these constraints exist, but their effectiveness is likely to be influenced by variability in soil types and farm management practices in the region. Trials were conducted during the 2008/2009 cropping seasons to investigate the nutrient use e...
